How Ontario’s 2024 Building Code Updates Impact Logix Brands Products

House labeled with Logix Brand Products
Ontario’s recent changes to the Building Code, set to take full effect in mid-2025, bring several updates aimed at improving the health and limit the energy consumption of residential buildings. These changes will directly affect builders, architects, and homeowners who use Logix Brands products, including Element ICF®Halo® The Advanced Graphite Insulation System, and Heat-Sheet®.

Below, we explore how these new regulations align with Logix Brands’ innovative solutions and how they can help builders stay compliant while delivering superior performance.

Radon Rough-In for Subfloor Depressurization

New Requirement: Ontario now mandates a rough-in for subfloor depressurization in all new residential homes to help mitigate radon gas exposure.

Impact on Logix Brands Products:

  • Heat-Sheet Heavy®: As a high-performance under-slab insulation system, Heat-Sheet® Heavy can be easily integrated with radon mitigation systems. Its design allows for proper airflow beneath slabs, ensuring an effective and code-compliant radon rough-in installation.

Enhanced Air Barrier Requirements

New Requirement: The code introduces stricter criteria for air barriers, reducing air leakage from the exterior ground into occupied spaces.

Impact on Logix Brands Products:

  • Element ICF®: As a monolithic concrete core system with continuous insulation, Element ICF inherently functions as an exceptional air barrier. The new code reinforces the value of ICF construction in creating airtight, energy-efficient homes.
  • Halo® Subterra®: This below-grade rigid insulation provides superior resistance to air leakage while protecting against moisture intrusion, making it an ideal choice for enhanced air barrier performance around foundations.

The continuous concrete core and the ICF foam panels ensure airtightness, making Element ICF walls highly efficient in controlling air leakage. This airtight assembly is a key feature of Element ICF, as air leakage is more critical to control than vapor diffusion in building science.

Full-Height Insulation for Foundation Walls

New Requirement: Insulation must now be installed over the full height of foundation walls enclosing basements and heated crawlspaces—eliminating the previously accepted 200mm (8-inch) gap.

Impact on Logix Brands Products:

  • Element ICF®: This update solidifies the advantage of Element ICF, which already provides full-height, continuous insulation from footings to the top of foundation walls. Builders using Element ICF won’t need additional adjustments to meet the new standard.
  • Halo® Subterra®: As an effective exterior foundation insulation solution, Subterra® ensures compliance with the new full-height requirement while enhancing thermal efficiency and moisture protection.
